Background Hard ticks infesting cattle are vectors of Tick-borne diseases that causes major public health problems and considerable socioeconomic losses to the livestock industry in tropical and subtropical countries. A repeated cross-sectional study was carried out by collecting ticks on cattle during the wet and dry seasons from January to August 2021 in order to determine hard tick prevalence, distribution, and abundance on cattle in Kilombero and Iringa Districts of Tanzania. The collected ticks were identified morphologically using published morphological keys under a stereomicroscope and confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. Results Out of 740 examined cattle, 304, (41.08%) were infested with ticks. In total, 1,780 ticks were counted on one side of the animal’s body and doubled, whereby resulting in a total of 3,560 ticks were recorded. Individual tick burden ranged from n = 2 to 82 ticks per animal, with a mean tick burden of n = 11.7 ± 0.68 per animal. A total of 1,889 ticks were collected from infected cattle including 109 additional ticks observed while collecting ticks based on the animal’s posture when restrained to the ground. Out of 1,889 ticks, nine species from three genera were identified morphologically: 1,377 fit in the genus Rhipicephalus, 459 to the genus of Amblyomma, and 53 to the genus Hyalomma. Rhipicephalus microplus was the most prevalent (n = 909, 48.1%), followed by Rhipicephalus evertsi (n = 310, 16.4%), Amblyomma lepidum (n = 310, 16.4%), Rhipicephalus appendiculatus (n = 140, 7.4%), Amblyomma gemma (n = 120, 6.4%), Hyalomma rufipes (n = 50, 2.6%), Amblyomma variegatum (n = 29, 1.5%), Rhipicephalus decoloratus (n = 18, 1.0%), while the least common was Hyalomma albiparmatum (n = 3, 0.2%). Tick diversity was higher in Iringa compared to Kilombero District. Tick prevalence was higher in wet season (n = 148, 41.11%). Ticks were widely distributed in different parts of the host body, with the highest distribution on zone 4 (n = 1,060, 56.11%), which includes groin, flank, abdomen, and around inner thigh of the hind legs and the lowest distribution on zone 2 (n = 14, 0.74%), which includes the back surface of the body. Both Amblyomma lepidum and Rhipicephalus microplus species were found in all the five body zones, and with the highest proportions recorded on zone 4: A. lepidum (n = 209, 67.42%) and R. microplus (n = 714, 78.55%). The nine tick species identified morphologically were also confirmed using molecular methods. However, during sequencing, two species (Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and R. decoloratus) had poor quality sequences and were excluded from the sequence analysis. Sequencing results indicated high nucleotide identity (96–100%) with sequences available in GenBank and Barcode of Life Database (BOLD). The phylogenetic analysis of partial mitochondrial COI and 16S rRNA gene sequences of ticks were used to confirm the morphological identification. Conclusion The results showed a high burden of tick infestation on cattle, which could reduce animal production and potentially increase the risk of tick-borne diseases. Background Conductive anaesthesia of the nerves around the head is one of the methods of intraoperative pain relief (under deep anaesthesia but before proceeding with the procedure). Performing this procedure on primates is especially challenging for the veterinarian, due to their cranial anatomy and topography, which has more in common with the human skull than with the skulls of other animals. Knowledge of key bony structures, including cranial foramina, is essential for effective anaesthesia of the cranial nerves. Results In this study, the differences in the topography of the cranial foramina in eight selected species of primates were examined: Angola colobus (Colobus angolensis), Celebes crested macaque (Macaca nigra), L’Hoest’s monkey (Allochrocebus lhoesti), baboon (Papio cynocephalus), buff-bellied capuchin (Sapajus xanthosternos), black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata), crowned lemur (Eulemur coronatus), and a ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) coming from the Wroclaw Zoological Garden (Poland). The cranial nerves running through the foramina have also been described and their anaesthesia techniques against bone points have been tested to relieve post-operative pain in the area of the head supplied by these nerves. Conclusion The tests carried out show differences in the topography of the cranial foramina, and therefore also differences in the methods of injection, so the results obtained in this study may be useful in veterinary medicine, especially for practising veterinarians....
Canine disc-associated cervical spondylomyelopathy (DA-CSM) is a form of caudal CSM, characterized by the compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots due to an intervertebral disc protrusion. It is more frequent in large canine breeds. A variety of surgical techniques has been proposed for DA-CSM. The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcomes of a cervical distraction–stabilization technique using an intervertebral anchored fusion device (C-LOX) combined with a locking compression plate (LCP plate) for the treatment of DA-CSM in dogs, based on clinical and radiographical follow-up data. Thirteen dogs affected by DA-CSM were included in the study. After the surgical procedure, an improvement in neurological status was documented in 9/13 cases. Background SLUG (also known as snai2), which is a transcription factor in epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), plays an important role in tumorigenesis. Several human studies have revealed that SLUG expression downregulates E-cadherin activity to induce metastasis and invasion of tumor cells, and its association with tumor mechanisms is under constant evaluation. In clinical veterinary medicine, one study revealed upregulated SLUG expression in canine oral squamous cell carcinoma. However, the association between canine mammary gland tumors (MGT), the most common neoplasm in intact female dogs, and SLUG has not been investigated yet. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the differences in SLUG expression among canine normal mammary gland tissue and MGTs using immunohistochemistry. In addition, its prognostic significance was evaluated by analyzing the correlation with the Ki-67 proliferation index and various clinicopathological features. Results SLUG expression increased substantially from normal mammary gland tissues to MGTs, especially showing the strongest expression in malignant MGT than in benign MGT. Negative SLUG expression was observed in mostly normal mammary gland tissues, whereas all tissues in malignant MGT showed positive SLUG expression. Furthermore, positive SLUG expression was associated with higher Ki-67 index, larger tumor size (> 3 cm), and metastasis. Kaplan– Meier survival curve analysis revealed that positive SLUG expression was significantly associated with poor overall and disease-free survival. Conclusions These results indicate that SLUG is upregulated in canine MGTs and positive SLUG expression is positively correlated with poor prognosis. Thus, SLUG protein can be a novel biomarker and therapeutic target for canine patients with MGT....
Background: Since the introduction of next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques, whole-exome sequencing (WES) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) have not only revolutionized research, but also diagnostics. The gradual switch from single gene testing to WES and WGS required a different set of skills, given the amount and type of data generated, while the demand for standardization remained. However, most of the tools currently available are solely applicable for human analysis because they require access to specific databases and/or simply do not support other species. Additionally, a complicating factor in clinical genetics in animals is that genetic diversity is often dangerously low due to the breeding history. Combined, there is a clear need for an easy-to-use, flexible tool that allows standardized data processing and preferably, monitoring of genetic diversity as well. To fill these gaps, we developed the R-package variantscanR that allows an easy and straightforward identification and prioritization of known phenotype-associated variants identified in dogs and other domestic animals. Results: The R-package variantscanR enables the filtering of variant call format (VCF) files for the presence of known phenotype-associated variants and allows for the estimation of genetic diversity using multi-sample VCF files. Next to this, additional functions are available for the quality control and processing of user-defined input files to make the workflow as easy and straightforward as possible. This user-friendly approach enables the standardisation of complex data analysis in clinical settings.
